In 1995, the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences began to develop circulating fluidized bed technology for the incineration of municipal solid waste and to build a 100 tons/day demonstration project in Shangzhuang, Haidian District, Beijing. The project received support from “Incineration and Comprehensive Utilization of Urban Solid Waste”, a major applied research and development project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and “Development of Urban Waste Incineration Technology”, a “Ninth Five-Year Plan” national key scientific and technological research project. In 2000, it passed the joint acceptance of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
